Zombies? Check. Apocalypse? Uh-huh. Violence? Yip. At the moment this seems to be the winning formula for a successful title. While not every title which holds these qualities is a winner (I’m talking about you, Yet Another Zombie Defense), thus far Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Plants Vs. Zombies, and Dead Rising have all proven to be hits.
So what makes this game different from the others and worth your time? Well if you grew up loving twin-stick shooters like Smash TV, then you’ll love this. The zombie-blasting carnage is split between 55 levels (days) and 9 different maps, some of which look eerily similar to some of those found in Left 4 Dead. Developer Nihilistic Software did an excellent job of taking a few proven formulas and tweaking them to create this game.
The first thing you’ll notice is how pretty and polished the graphics are. Sparks, fires, and explosions gloriously light up the interactive environments as you destroy barrels, dismantle cars and annihilate zombies. As you are performing these tasks and trying to survive the apocalypse, helpless citizens will ran across the screen while awaiting pick-up via helicopter. Each successful citizen saved will award you points, which is a welcome change from just being selfish and worrying about yourself all the time, right?
Also, while you’re wreaking dissidence among the undead, they’ll drop weapons at random as well, including your standard variety of flame throwers, mini-guns and shotguns. When you run out of ammo, you will default to your trusty M-16, which never runs short on its supply of bullets. Weapons aren’t the only variety in the game because as you progress, the zombies begin wielding dynamite, throwing knives and crushing you.
The lengths of the levels increases as the game goes on as well. Where the first day may take only two minutes to work through, the 30th can take an upward of 10 minutes. Where this game really shines though is in the multiplayer mode, as up to 4 friends can gang up to spread carnage around the city.
So, is this game worth your time? Well, if you’re looking for a quick break from Left 4 Dead 2 and prefer an isometric view, then this game is for you. At $9.99 (or 800 MS points) Zombie Apocalypse is certainly worth the small hit to your pocket. The game isn’t perfect though: the four characters have no distinct abilities, but that’s a simple oversight that I’m sure can be corrected if there ever is a sequel. So, if you are one of the few gamers out there who isn’t already broke, then reach around for your wallet and throw 10 bones down for this game to get your post-apocalyptic fix with Zombie Apocalypse.
