Microsoft refunding standard-def Minecraft purchases

Bringing Minecraft from the PC to the television has been incredibly successful, in part due to the ability to play with friends locally. Groups of up to four people are in for a good time, so long as they play on an HD set.

The split-screen multiplayer mode simply won’t work on a standard definition television. Microsoft and Mojang failed to highlight this when the game released, leaving a few groups of ill-equipped gamers in the cold. The publisher is doing the right thing, however. Customers burned by this oversight are eligible for a refund.

“We updated our pre-sale notification to inform customers that an HD screen is required for the split-screen multiplayer feature on Minecraft: Xbox 360 Edition,” a Microsoft spokesperson told Kotaku. “If a player does not have an HD screen and purchased this game prior to the notification update, they are eligible for a full refund through customer support.”

I’m actually pretty impressed by Microsoft’s willingness to step up and refund the purchase so quickly. MS may be a NIGHTMARE to deal with on the developer side, but it’s really cool how quick they are to protect their customers.
