Wizorb Developers Mixing Crafting and Contra in Mercenary Kings

Tribute Games, the designers of the most excellent Wizorb, are now paying tribute to the run-and-gun shooter. Mercenary Kings looks to infuse the cartoony Metal Slug style with a crafting system to allow players to customize their arsenals.

Mercenary Kings features animations by Paul Robertson, who also worked on the animations for Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, among other projects. A post on their blog mentions that the game is still in a very early stage of development and the trailer reveals that it won’t be available until 2013. Tribute’s Justin Cyr told us they are planning for 4-player support and hopes to get the game on XBLA. “Right now the aim would be to release it on PC and XBLA rather than XBLIG given that the scope is significantly larger than Wizorb.”

About Mike Wall

Mike grew up and lives near Philadelphia and has been intrigued with games ever since his parents preached that they rotted his brain. He studied journalism at Penn State and got his master's degree in secondary education before realizing that not even summers off would make that job palatable. He now works in marketing and is trying to find time to continue writing a book about zombies, aliens, vampires, the end of the world, and a talking cat.

This reminds me of metal slug. And that pleases me.

I never played Metal Slug, and only played the second Contra (I don’t remember what it was called elsewhere but it was Probotector II here) but this one genuinely gave me a little twinge of excitement.

Both games were very difficult, but still a blast to play, especially if your co-op partner knows that they’re doing. I think one of the many iterations of Metal Slug is on LIVE right now as well.

Man. Someone over there REALLY likes making sprites. It’s a pretty amazing amount of effort on their part and it really shows.
