About Mike Wall

Mike grew up and lives near Philadelphia and has been intrigued with games ever since his parents preached that they rotted his brain. He studied journalism at Penn State and got his master's degree in secondary education before realizing that not even summers off would make that job palatable. He now works in marketing and is trying to find time to continue writing a book about zombies, aliens, vampires, the end of the world, and a talking cat.

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of March 18

Posted on by Mike Wall in Features, xblig | 1 Comment

You know it’s a good week when more than half of the new releases leave a lasting impression, which basically makes this the best week of indies of the whole year. There’s a lot of variety in the new releases from board games to 2D platformers to party games, but pretty much everyone should be able to find something they like with this lineup. Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week Super Ninja Warrior Extreme – Dave  Despite its …

Rock Bottom Review: Juvenile Joy

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, XBLIG Reviews | Leave a comment

Get Rich or Die Gaming was profane, juvenile, and remarkably hilarious, but it was also shockingly successful. Perhaps word of mouth spread of its insanity, or perhaps people were drawn to the sleazy cover art and catchy name, but the game sold baller amounts of copies and allowed Angus Cheng quit his day job and work full time on its sequel. A year and a half later, Rock Bottom picks up right where Get Rich left off with the downtrodden …

Team 2Bit karate-chopped their way through the competition on The Next Game Boss, and now they’ve turned to raise the final $10,000 to finish their retro brawler Fist Puncher. The team estimates that they are about 80% done the game, which they liken to a cross between Double Dragon and Castle Crashers. The entire project has been self-funded until now, and the extra cash would allow developer Matt Lewandowski to quit his job so the brothers can move to San Francisco …

Lone Survivor is Now Available on PC and Mac

After four apparently arduous years in development, Superflat Games’ Lone Survivor is finally finished and is now available for $10 on Mac & PC. Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe the trailer for this post-apocalyptic adventure where you play as a boy questioning his grip on reality as he escapes from an infected city. The trailer quickly devolves from a somber, reflective tone into a twisted trip that would make H.R. Geiger proud. A $50 First Aid Edition is also …

New Frozen Synapse Ending Spoofs Mass Effect 3 Debacle

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC News | Leave a comment

Bioware may be “actively and seriously” considering altering the ending of Mass Effect 3 to appease its rowdy fan base, but Mode 7 beat them to the punch. The indie developer has updated the ending of their IGF award-winning game Frozen Synapse with a new ending replete with dinosaurs and ponies. “This is not a criticism of Bioware or anything they have said / done. It is an experiment: I wanted to know how this felt. Honestly, it felt like …

Robofish Review: Sea of Destruction

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, XBLIG Reviews | 5 Comments

Not a week goes by where a new twin-stick shooter isn’t dumped into the ocean that is Xbox Live Indie Games. It’s almost cliché to even comment on the zombie-like hordes of them, but Robofish is a great example of a game that builds on the existing standards and really puts its own glowing, neon shine on the formula. As perhaps you may have surmised, you play as a robot fish – a robofish if you will – that is …
