PAX East: Hands on Super T.I.M.E. Force: A Blast To The Past

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Previews, XBLA Previews | 2 Comments

Canadian dev team Capybara (Capy) Games, most notably known for their recent iOS hit Super Brothers EP: Sword and Sworcery, revealed their newest title, Super T.I.M.E. Force, to an unsuspecting audience during the IGF Awards show at GDC. Unsure of what to make of the surprise attack, and with little information to go on, I was uncertain of what to expect when I had my first opportunity to experience the game at the PAX Indie Mega Booth. Grabbing a seat …

Sine Mora Review: Mora Please

Posted on by Dave Voyles in XBLA, XBLA Reviews | 2 Comments

Diversity: That is the underlying message behind Sine Mora. Never have I see a shmup with such an assortment of stages, enemies, and projectiles as I have within the world of Sine Mora. Through 7 gloriously detailed maps, I had the pleasure of navigating a collection of ships with an array of unique powers. I don’t generally look forward to shmups coming down the pipeline, but was curious as to whether or not this title would live up to my expectations. The story …

IndieCity recently held a successful Developer Challenge where their goal was to get 100 developers to submit titles before a set deadline. Game creators have held up their end of the bargain, and now IndieCity is delivering an interesting challenge to the gamers. For the next 12 days, a series of questions will appear on the site: each question is tailored toward one of the 100 games that have been submitted. Don’t worry about playing too far into any of these games though, …

AirMech Takes Flight at PAX East

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, PC News | Leave a comment

Michael Bay may have shattered our delicate childhood memories when he took the reigns of the recent Transformers films into his own hands, but there is fortunately still hope for mechs. If you’re attending PAX East next weekend, you’ll be glad to hear that your childhood fondness of mechs can be restored in the form of AirMech, the PC RTS/shooter from Carbon Games, which will be playable at Booth 772. For those of you who just can’t bear the wait, …

Philippe da Silva Spills the Beans on Ace on Steroids and the IndieFreaks XNA framework

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Interviews, News, PC News, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

This week I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Paris, France native Philippe Da Silva of IndieFreaks.com. We spoke about his upcoming game Ace on Steroids, in addition to the IndieFreaks Game Framework, which is freely available to all XNA developers. Ace on Steroids: What’s in the name? Well, nothing really special. I was working on an Asteroids Redux with some enhanced 3D visuals, some good rock music and realistic 3D physics, so I was looking for a …

Nine Dots Studio Brings Big Changes to Brand with Latest Patch

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

It seems as though developer Nine Dots Studio has listened keenly to the criticisms of its latest title, Brand, and taken them in stride. Today it announced an update that brings many changes to the title (along with a well produced video). Most of the updates correct a number of issues we had with the game, including the hero bouncing off of the monsters, loading times, and the inability to turn in midair. Now if only every game released a trailer …

James Silva Dishes on the Dishwasher at GDC

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, XBLA, XBLA News | Leave a comment

Last Thursday at GDC, James Silva, lead dishwasher at Ska Studios, gave a postmortem for last year’s XBLA hit The Dishwasher: Vampire Smile. He opened with the story of how the first game in the series, The Dishwasher: Dead Samurai came to be. As a hobbyist developer in 2007, Silva submitted Dead Samurai as a Dream.Build.Play contestant just months before graduating college in upstate New York. Writing it off as something he didn’t believe would actually win, he soon forgot …

Microsoft Outlines Its Unified Metro Vision Sans XNA

On Thursday morning at GDC, Chase Boyd, who works in the Windows Graphics Division at Microsoft, presented a speech titled “Creating a Great Metro Style Game,” where he divulged details about this new process. Throughout the talk, XNA was nowhere to be found, but I questioned him about transferring a current XNA project over to Metro, and he assured me that Microsoft “is currently working on the white paper to streamline that process,” and that the updates in Visual Studio 2011 …
