Spotless platforming: the picaresque Dustforce hits Steam next week

Posted on by Dylan Martin in PC News | 1 Comment

Ladies and gentlemen, I want to turn your attention to what may be the first major platformer of 2012. It’s called Dustforce, and it takes the concept of  broom sweeping to new and exciting levels — like Super Meat Boy exciting. And it comes out January 17 on Steam. As you may see in the trailer, the mechanics of movement are very similar to the 2010 indie hit, but the real hook is the way the sweeper’s broom tethers to piles of …

Major Nelson reveals list of top XBLIG purchases for 2011, and it’s quite crafty

Posted on by Dylan Martin in XBLIG News | 4 Comments

While we’re busy creating a list for our favorite Xbox Live Indie Games of 2011, Major Nelson presented his own on his blog yesterday, showing the most purchased games of the year. After a quick browse of the top 20, three themes appear prominent: Minecraft, zombies, and avatars. Surprised? Considering the success of Minecraft last year, it should be no surprise that five of the top ten purchases are creative offshoots (with FortressCraft Chapter 1 and Total Miner: Forge in the first and second …

Cursed Loot (the RPG formerly known as Epic Dungeon) was a beloved 2010 hit for us and many dungeon-crawling enthusiasts. It was also the first game released as part of the Indie Games Winter Uprising. For those reasons, this news might excite you: the game’s developer is working on a new title and it’s going to spaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaccee. Keeping some of the mechanics that made Cursed Loot so great, Cursed Cosmos will be an open world space RPG. While gameplay videos released so far have …

Soulcaster creator reveals Escape Goat

If you want to know why Ian Stocker hasn’t started work on Soulcaster III yet, he has a scape goat for that—an Escape Goat, to be precise. The game is Stocker’s third project under the MagicalTimeBean imprint, and it features a 2D Metroidvania style where you play as — you guessed it — a goat. While it’s still in the prototype phase, Stocker has revealed some additional details about the Xbox Live Indie Game, including prototype videos and screenshots. As …

SpyParty opens sign-ups for early access beta

Posted on by Dylan Martin in News, PC, PC News | 1 Comment

SpyParty is quite the anomaly of a game—not even half-finished, supported by massive hype from the press, and sporting asymmetrical multiplayer gameplay that is, at times, intense and surreal. It’s an experience that’s only been available to members of the press and attendees of various game conventions, but all that is going to change very soon. Today, principal developer Chris Hecker opened sign-ups for an early-access beta of the game, which will roll out to participants over the next couple of months. …

Battleblock Theater preview: Labyrinthine fun

Posted on by Dylan Martin in Previews, PSN Previews, XBLA, XBLA Previews | Leave a comment

A recent trend in game design shows that not only can dying be fun, but it should. Games like Super Meat Boy encourage us to take on intense challenges through failure and frustration because of that succulent little splat and the short time it takes to get there again. An upcoming 2D platformer by the name of Battleblock Theater continues this trend and adds the opportunity to off your friends—over and over again—while cooperating in order to reach a common …
