Xbox Indie Review: A Shooter

Posted on by Erron Kelly in Reviews, xblig | Leave a comment

It’s so, so much easier to write a review for a game that is either exceptionally good or exceptionally bad. Those sorts of games give you an automatic launching point for a review – you can open up with a gushing endorsement or a brutal list of complaints that will let readers know how you feel about the game in question right off the top. With games that run smack along the center line on the highway, it is frustrating …

New Dashboard Update relegates Indie Games to “Specialty Shops” section

Posted on by Erron Kelly in News | 2 Comments

Hey Microsoft, It’s me, Indie Games, and I think we need to have a little talk about our relationship. This new Dashboard Update has really put a strain on things, you know? I mean, sure. Now you can search for specific titles in Netflix, and I’m sure it’s great that ESPN3 is on there now (except for those people who are with providers who don’t carry that, or providers who do but demand a cable subscription before those users can …

Xbox Indie Review: Star Hammer Tactics

Posted on by Erron Kelly in Reviews, xblig | 4 Comments

My original impression of Star Hammer Tactics was of a game that was very middle of the road. Not mind-blowing, but not awful, either. Having put it down and come back to it weeks later, my opinion has shifted in the decidedly negative direction. Star Hammer Tactics is a simulacrum of a turn-based strategy/ simulation game. Each mission gives you a few ships and pits you against the enemy ships on a 2D grid. The smallest ships have a huge …

Xbox Indie Review: Avatar Cannon

Posted on by Erron Kelly in Reviews, xblig | 7 Comments

There isn’t much to say about Avatar Cannon. It’s a game where you fire your Avatar through the air across the savannah with the goal of bouncing off of wild animals to see how far you can get in a set number of shots. The popularity of games like this exploded over half a decade ago, with arguably the most popular one being Kitten Cannon. The fact that games like Kitten Cannon exist and are so widely known creates problems …

Xbox Indie Review: Twin Blades: The Reaping Vanguard

Posted on by Erron Kelly in Reviews, xblig | 12 Comments

Twin Blades: The Reaping Vanguard presents the story of a young nun on a mission to stem the invasion of zombies attacking her city. Armed with both projectile weaponry and a large scythe, this nun has to take on hoards of enemies as well as surprisingly difficult bosses in order to save the city. The game switches from day to night, and with every switch the zombies become more difficult to defeat.  They often utilize any means possible to render …

Xbox Indie Review: Who Did I Date Last Night?

Posted on by Erron Kelly in Reviews, xblig | 5 Comments

I’m quickly beginning to realize that there are people in the world who will exploit absolutely anything for the chance to make a buck. With that said, I got the chance to play another of Silver Dollar Games’ offerings to the Xbox Live indie scene. Who Did I Date Last Night is a quick-witted, fast-paced Guess Who-style game that delves deep into your own subconscious and asks you to reveal the mysteries of your own past, all in the interest …

Xbox Indie Review: Block Killer

Posted on by Erron Kelly in Reviews, xblig | 2 Comments

I know what you’re thinking. You’re thinking, “Man, I love Modern Warfare 2, but sometimes, I dunno, I wish there were something I could play where I shot things. Something that still has the fast-paced reflexes needed to succeed in Modern Warfare 2, but something a little less hostile. Oh! And something that has a geometric shape as an enemy, because screw geometry.” Have I ever got the game for you. Block Killer is an indie title on the Xbox …

Indie Review: Avatar Onslaught

Stop right there, reader. Before you make it past this very sentence you need to do something for me; it isn’t difficult to do, and it will take but a moment.  All I need you to do is create a mental picture for me.  Take just a few seconds to engage in a little theatre of the mind, in the form and shape of Space Invaders. Do you have it: that vague recollection of Space Invaders?  OK, good.  Now take …
