Shield the Beat Review: Set lasers to ‘rock’

Rhythm games, as far as big budget titles go, are kind of on the decline. Luckily our focus at Armless Octopus isn’t on big budget titles, so I get to keep this review positive. Shield the Beat takes the essence of a rhythm game, adds new twists and maps the controls to the analog sticks for ultra accessibility. But don’t be fooled by this quick description, some of those new twists add a lot of depth – and challenge – …

Gish hasn’t been the new kid on the indie block in quite a while, but that doesn’t mean its developer, Chronic Logic, is going to let it fall by the wayside. Originally released in 2004, Gish flew pretty under the radar until its inclusion with the first Humble Indie Bundle last year. Now, with a little help from Plantronics, Chronic Logic has set the price of Gish to whatever you want, and are also running a contest through their

One of the biggest setbacks to the online functionality of fast-paced games is Internet latency. This is all the more true for fighting games, which are notorious for requiring rapid response to user control in order to pull off complex combos. In order to avoid this potentially disastrous situation in their new 2D fighter coming to XBLA, PSN and PC later this year, Autumn Games has teamed up with “Good Game, Peace Out.” GGPO is a networking technology developed by …

Have you ever looked at some of the games created by the independent developers for the Xbox Indie platform and thought, “I bet making something like that would be fun, but I have no idea where to start,” or perhaps “I bet I could make a way better game than Try Not to Fart, but I just don’t know how.” Good news, Microsoft has just released the perfect tutorial for you. Over at the App Hub, the official portal for …

This is the final week of Demiurge Studio’s ‘Design Many Robots’ contest. The winner of the contest will have their creation featured in the “first expansion pack” of their downloadable title, Shoot Many Robots, being released later this year. Contestants are asked to “sketch, paint, build, or otherwise render a robot” for submission to the studio, while also throwing in some background info on their mechanical beast. Winners also get a free trip to Boston to take a tour of …

Swarm review: Quelling the swarm

Posted on by Taylor Bliss in PSN, PSN Reviews, Reviews, XBLA, XBLA Reviews | Leave a comment

As I booted up Swarm, there were two options laid out to me on the right hand portion of the screen: “Press A to select” and “Do not press Y.” Naturally, I chose the latter and watched the death of my first Swarmite. Up close on the welcome screen, the slaughtering of the Swarmites is actually kind of disturbing. Normally in the game, you have an isometric view that makes the Swarmites look more like ants and their deaths more …
