PAX East: Skulls of the Shogun Shows All of Its Cards

Posted on by Dave Voyles in PC, PC Previews, Previews, XBLA, XBLA Previews | Leave a comment

We last saw Skulls of the Shogun during 2011’s PAX East. Since then, developer Haunted Temple Studios has come a long way towards improving not only the game’s aesthetic, but also refining the gameplay for a larger audience.

The presentation is stunning, from the whimsical and offbeat dialogue, to the smooth animations as my characters gallop gracefully across the battlefield before striking into battle. Haunted Temple’s professionalism and love for all things Japanese even extends to their media kit, which is reminiscent of a Sega Saturn jewel case; perhaps it’s a love letter from studio lead Jake Kazdal’s years spent in Japan.

At its heart, Skulls is a turn-based strategy game heavily inspired by the Nintendo DS’s Advance Wars series. Players take control of a recently deceased and stubborn samurai general from feudal Japan who refuses to finish his transition into the afterlife. Along the way, he recruits other spectral soldiers to do his bidding and fight by his side. Should your general die, the game is over, but his pawns are disposable and are always willing to die (again) for their cause. A low barrier to entry is a key element to the game, as players are limited to three unit types, each with their own distinct advantages.

Sword & Sworcery EP Venturing to Steam April 16

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC, PC News | Leave a comment

Sword & Sworcery EP turned a lot of heads when it was released last year on iOS, but believe it or not, there are still a few holdouts who have yet to succomb to the power of the electronic fruit company. Those rebels should be pleased to hear that the pixelated point-and click adventure will be headed to Steam on April 16. A Mac version will be available “before the summer solstice” (that’s June 20!).

“It is our sincere hope that this new edition of the project will connect with a broad audience, people who have access to a computer and who have a fondness for musically-inclined computer-enabled stories of myth & mystery,” Capybara Games wrote on its blog.

The developer promised a “faithful representation” of the original game, but there will be some minor tweaks to accommodate the 2-button mouse. We’ll find out how faithful it is when we get our hands on it this weekend at PAX East.

Orcs Must Die 2 Murdering More Orcs This Summer, Playable at PAX East

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC, PC News | Leave a comment

We killed our fair share of orcs last year in Robot Entertainment’s Orcs Must Die!, but aparrently enough of those green jerks survived to scrape into a sequel. Orcs Must Die! 2 is slated to hit PCs this summer, less than a year after the original game was released. The War Mage from the original orc-slaying simulator will be joined by the somewhat dubious Sorceress for some cooperative orc smashing.

Orcs Must Die! 2 appears to subscribe to the “more, more, more” mentality that we’ve come to expect from video game sequels. It’s promising more enemies, a cooperative campaign, and more defensive traps to punish those wretched orcs. Perhaps most interestingly, a revamped skull system will allow players to make permanent upgrades to their defenses that will be persistent.

We’ll get our hands on Orcs Must Die! 2 this weekend at PAX East, but in the meantime, you can check out the teaser trailer above.

Fuelcell Games has good news for PC enthusiasts looking forward to their port of Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. Joe Olson and Michel Gagne revealed that the Shadow Hunters DLC is going to be included at absolutely no extra charge on Nintendojo’s Airship Travelogues podcast.

The duo also said that while the game is finished, a release date has yet to be decided upon. Of course, keyboard and mouse controls plus Steam support will only make a good thing better for some, so it will likely be worth the wait.

Team 2Bit Hitting up Kickstarter to KO Fist Puncher

Team 2Bit karate-chopped their way through the competition on The Next Game Boss, and now they’ve turned to raise the final $10,000 to finish their retro brawler Fist Puncher. The team estimates that they are about 80% done the game, which they liken to a cross between Double Dragon and Castle Crashers. The entire project has been self-funded until now, and the extra cash would allow developer Matt Lewandowski to quit his job so the brothers can move to San Francisco and take advantage of the office space they won on IGN’s reality show.

“Until now we could just make Fist Puncher at our own pace, no funding was really needed because we had our day jobs to pay the bills.  But after winning the Next Game Boss we realized we were in a new situation.  The buzz about us is happening right now, and people are asking to buy our games immediately.  It’s the classic dilema that drives businesses to raise capital - we have customers, but we need more resources to get the product into their hands quickly,” said Jake Lewandowski.

Backers of the project can receive everything from digital copies of Fist Puncher and Washington’s Wig (the game that won The Next Game Boss) to pixelized versions of themselves in the game as an NPC, enemy, playable character, or boss. For a cool ten grand, Team 2Bit will even turn your game idea into a playable 8-bit game. You can head over to the Kickstarter page for more info. The team plans to have Fist Puncher available on Xbox Live Indie Games and PC in September.

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

CSR Studios’ Xbox Live Indie Games standout Dead Pixels was absolutely fantastic. More people will get the chance to experience it when it launches on PC in the near future, but it needs some beta testing first. And CSR is looking for volunteers.

Those selected for the program will receive a free copy of the finished game and their name will appear in the credits. Interested parties should email their PC’s specifications to DeadPixelsBeta@csr-studios.com . CSR anticipates every volunteer should receive a slot, so long as they can match the estimated requirements.

Estimated System Requirements

  • Windows XP, Vista or 7
  • Processor: 2.2 Ghz
  • Memory: 512MB
  • Video Card: 128mb Video Memory

The studio will notify volunteers “in the next few days” on their status as potential testers.

Sequence Lines up More than 100,000 Sales

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Sequence is finally feeling the beat. Iridium Studios’ RPG-rhythm mash-up has now sold 100,000 copies across Xbox Live Indie Games, GamersGate, and Steam. That’s an impressive tally for a game that developer Jason Wishnov once labeled “a bit of a flop” after it sold only 2,000 copies over its first few weeks on XBLIG.

We’ve contacted Iridium to see if we can get a breakdown on how the sales are divided, but considering the XBLIG version had a five-month head start and the Steam version surpassed the total revenue of the XBLIG version in a mere 7 hours, it’s a safe bet those numbers favor the PC. Sequence joins fellow XBLIG alumni Blocks that Matter and Cthulhu Saves the World in discovering new life on the PC thanks to the sweet, lucrative nectar of Steam.

Iridium is currently working on a new game, “which is very mysterious and you should not ask questions about it because that would totally ruin the suspense, man.” Of course, we totally asked questions, and we’ll report back when we hear anything, man.

Sequence Reaches 100,000 Sales

Iridium Studios’ flagship title reaches an impressive and yet numerically arbitrary total

LOS ANGELES, CA, March 19th, 2012 – Sequence, the critically lauded rhythm/RPG hybrid from indie developer Iridium Studios, has sold a combined 100,000 copies on the Steam, Xbox Live Indie Games, and GamersGate platforms in a mere five months’ time.

“Seriously, though, that value only has significance because of the base-10 system humanity has taken a liking to,” said Jason Wishnov, CEO of Iridium Studios. “It has no actual meaning. If we were in base-9, we would have celebrated 59,049 copies sold instead.”

Peers in the gaming industry have told Iridium Studios to kindly shut up and profusely thank their fans, who helped them to achieve that precious sixth digit. Iridium, after some mild grumbling, agreed. They are currently working on a second game, which is very mysterious and you should not ask questions about it because that would totally ruin the suspense, man.

The first of Iridium Studios’ titles, Sequence features over 12 hours of gameplay, 90 minutes of recorded dialogue, and 28 tracks from Ronald Jenkees and Michael Wade Hamilton. Players switch back and forth between three separate streams of notes, fending off enemy attacks while maintaining a constant barrage of offensive and defensive spells. The art and character design were completed by Wendi Chen.
