Team2Bit Dragon Punches Their Way Onto IGN Reality Show

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Reality TV shows are all the rage. I mean who doesn’t want to watch short-tempered wealthy housewives duke it out in their own little worlds? There isn’t much for us gamers though. Sure, Sony has The Tester, but that’s more absurd challenges as people make their way toward simply testing games. But what about seeing the process of developing a full game, from inception to completion, along with a few kinks in the chain? Fortunately, IGN has concocted such a show, titled The Next Game Boss.

XBLIG developer Team2Bit has made the cut, and the duo of brother’s Matt and Jake Lewandowski illustrate their newest game concept in the first episode that aired yesterday on IGN’s YouTube channel. They “operate under the moniker ‘Team First Puncher,’” which is also the name of their upcoming XBLIG title, explaining “Yeah we couldn’t be ‘Team Team2Bit.’”

You can root the XBLIG developers on and follow along their progress through their Twitter account, @Team2Bit.

Brand Making its Mark on Xbox on February 2

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, xblig | 4 Comments

Brand has finally recovered from that nasty bug that delayed its release back in November, which means you’ll get a chance to slice up some manticores on February 2. Nine Dots Studio spent some of the extra time polishing up menus and adding in Avatar support, but we’re more excited to start shooting flame walls out of that upgradable sword. In the meantime, take another gander at that spiffy trailer.

New Miasma 2 Footage Tactically Unveils First Person Segment

Sinister corporations tend to be a bit obstinate when it comes to changing their nefarious ways or closing up shop entirely. Heck, sometimes it can take several sequels before they finally take the hint. Vilhelm Industries will return to reprise its role as the freedom-hating enterprise later this year in Miasma 2. ESP Games recently released a lengthy video walking through the combat and introducing some of the new features it has implemented in hopes to improve on its predecessor.

There’s a new first-person mode in between levels where you can walk around and talk to your squad and do other RPG things like steal everyone’s prized possessions upgrade your characters. Developer David Addis explains that they’ve remixed the combat from the first game and calls the sequel a “turn-based planning game.” Basically that means that you’ll input the commands for your team in between each round and then watch the melee unfold over the course of a few seconds and repeat until one team is zipped up in body bags. Older PC junkies might see some similarities to the D&D Gold Box games. We’ll find out for sure when Miasma 2 comes to Xbox Live Indie Games later this year.

Contest is closed! Thanks to everyone who entered, and congrats to Jody Owsley (@viper1829) on winning. Okay, admit it. It’s fun to be bad. It’s okay, we won’t tell your parents. XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of January 15

Posted on by Mike Wall in Features, xblig | Leave a comment

Zombies, Russians, spaceships and robot cowboys? Heck of a strange week for the old indies, as evidenced by a Christmas game that missed the mark by about a month or so. It was a pretty tight battle between Hypership and Blocks for the prestigious award, but in end the cubical undead put the brakes on that out-of-control ship.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Block Zombies! – Mike

Block Zombies! gives a cubical middle finger to all those twin-stick shooters that constrict you to a tiny area and lets you run around a voxel wonderland while murdering the faces of tons of zombies. The game’s clean, colorful look suits it well, and it helps alleviate the feeling of dread that would otherwise accompany a small girl running around an entire town filled with zombies. Upgrade points allow you to beef up your arsenal and provide a little bit of a feeling of progression, and items like grenades and landmines help round out your supplies. Block Zombies! Review: Night of the Living Legos

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | 2 Comments

Thanks, I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1. Thanks for your addictive gameplay. Thanks for your stupid, catchy song. Thanks for creating a template that countless mindless, shambling hordes of games have imitated, and shamelessly refused to improve upon. The twin-stick shooter may be the most prolific genre represented in Xbox Live Indie Games, but most are redundant experiences that aren’t even worth Microsoft’s server space. But every so often a game like Block Zombies! comes around, shuffles the pieces up just enough, and mixes in a few new wrinkles to come out with something that feels fresh and fun.

Yes, Block Zombies! is another zombie twin-stick shooter, and yes it apes the voxel style that Minecraft returned to the limelight, but you know what? It totally works. The game’s carefree visual style and upbeat tempo makes Block Zombies! an absolute delight to play. It’s like you’re a  kid wandering through a Lego playground that just so happens to be infested with cubical zombies who explode into tiny pieces when killed.

Hypership Still out of Control Announced, Released, Still out of Control

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, xblig | Leave a comment

Space is pretty darned big, which is a lesson the poor pilot of Hypership Out of Control! learned the hard way. The pilot’s brakes blew out back in 2010 (probably space rats chewed through some wires), and the ship has been zooming through the cosmos ever since. Now the adventure continues in Hypership Still Out of Control!, which was released yesterday on Xbox Live Indie Games for 80 MS points ($1). The sequel promises the same 4-player intense action, new levels, and new graphical upgrades that make the asteroids look significantly less like space meatballs (rats!).

The Best XBLIG New Releases of 2012 (so far)

Posted on by Mike Wall in xblig | 3 Comments

Okay, maybe that headline is a bit sensationalist, but we missed last week’s new release post, which means this double dose does technically represent the best of the first half of the first month of 2012. Of course that means you’ll get two slimy, bloody tentacle awards to check out, along with all the normal XBLIG trimmings. You know, just in case you needed a twin-stick shooter, pong clone, sleazy adventure game, 2D platformer, snake game, or chauvinistic FMV game.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Awards of the Week

EvilQuest – Mike

EvilQuest is the perfect game for those like me who sympathized with all the loathsome villains who were never able to overcome their arch rivals, or people who just enjoy playing games like Zelda. I guess if you like both, you can consider yourself blessed. Or cursed. Whatever makes more sense. Basically you play as an evil dude who wants to enslave the world and murder God. That means finding the Chaos Axe, a weapon powerful enough to destroy that aforementioned deity.

P3 – Erron

It’s a twin-stick, arena-based shooter, but the twist is that while you still need to fly around and shoot everything that isn’t you, you also have to protect a large globular object in the center of the arena. The life bar of the object you are protecting also functions as a precious resource, allowing you to boost your weapons or speed in exchange for an amount of health. It’s a neat twist on the concept.
