Fez developer Polytron ‘probably’ losing one third of the team

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in News, XBLA, XBLA News | 2 Comments

Polytron Corporation worked on Fez for five years as a three-man team. Now that the game is out they may end up losing a third of their staff.

Renaud Bédard, the game’s lone programmer, said he’s likely going to break away from designer Phil Fish and sound engineer Jason DeGroot. He cites his desire to join a larger development team as the main reason.

“I will probably not be working at Polytron after Fez,” Bédard told Edge in an interview. “We’ve been a really close-knit team for five years, and that’s not necessarily healthy.”

“Being a lone programmer is a great experience: you do everything in the game, but you never have anybody to learn from or bounce ideas off. There’s the internet and forums, but that’s not the same experience as being part of a proper team, and I think that’s the experience I’m after now.”

Bédard cites his inexperience as a developer, undefined milestone targets and moving goalposts as difficulties faced during Fez‘s five year incubation period. He also touches on what it was like to work with Fish.

“There’s also perfectionism, and that’s down to Phil. If it’s not up to the standards we set ourselves, it’s not good enough. At many points, me and other people in the team were like, ‘We need to get this out. Everyone’s complaining. Everyone’s burnt out.’ But that’s Phil, his personality, and his vision of himself: he can’t just say, ‘That’s good enough, and that’s what you’re going to get.’”

Firing Range 2 discharged from chamber, hits XBLIG center mass

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Milkstone Studio’s Firing Range failed to excite the crew here at Armless Octopus back in November. Perhaps the newly released sequel will fare better.

Firing Range 2 is packing an improved loadout when compared to its predecessor. The new outdoor environment is a big improvement over the original’s warehouse room. There are 12 weapons in four categories, ranging from pistols to sniper rifles to semi-automatics. There’s also a night vision mode and online multiplayer, where you attempt to hit more targets than your opponent.

This target shooting simulator is available for 80 Microsoft points ($1) on the Xbox Live Marketplace right now.

Jelly Escape finally makes its big break

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, PC, PC News | Leave a comment

Ever wonder what the life of a jelly is like? What is jelly anyway? In the world of Jelly Escape their sole purpose is to provide entertainment for those willing to play them at the arcade, but they’ve had enough of this life and decided that it’s finally time for them to make their escape. Developer TawStudio, based out of Brazil, has released their second title, which is freely available in Flash form at the online gaming portal ArmorGames starting this week.

With a bit of the 80s arcade style feel and aesthetic (especially in the opening cinematic), many of Jelly Escape’s platforming elements will seem strikingly familiar to fans of Super Meat Boy, including the tight controls, colorful trails (of jelly!) and smooth animations. In fact, Super Meat Boy will be a guest star in one form or another, in addition to characters from Limbo, Machinarium, and Kingdom Rush.

Can’t wait for the trailer to finish? It’s cool, you can play the game right now by clicking here.

Boot Hill Heroes is like Earthbound: Wild West edition, Kickstarter up

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Have you ever found yourself wishing Nintendo’s Earthbound was a little more The Good The Bad and The Ugly in terms of style? It turns out Experimental Gamer’s Boot Hill Heroes is riding into town on that exact horse.

Boot Hill Heroes is being billed as a throwback project, citing influence from not just Earthbound, but other 16-bit classics like Square’s Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy series as well. One look at the trailer proves it — this game wears its influences on its chest like a sheriff’s badge.

The story tells the tale of a townstead on the brink of all-out war with the Chepakwik Indians after a supposed raid. Things can be set straight by a truth-knowing farm boy (read: main character) and his three friends. All four party members can be controlled by separate people over the course of a 10 to 15 hour campaign thanks to a four-player co-op mode.

All of the Spaghetti Western tropes are present and accounted for, like saloons, spittoons, outlaws and standoffs. There are gameplay implications as well. Different hats may grant your character fresh style but new abilities as well. A ‘Stetson’ hat will open up new pistol techniques, while an Indian Headdress will impart the knowledge of magical support dances upon characters.

Experimental Gamer is looking for a little help through a Kickstarter page. The team is looking to hire someone to create music and sound effects in order to make their targeted release date of October 2012. They’re about $700 short of their $5000 goal as of this post.

This town is big enough for both us, and the planned Xbox Live Indie and PC versions of this project, so we’ll be keeping an eye on Boot Hill Heroes and the studio’s newly launched development blog as the days go by.

Super Killer Hornet Stinging XBLIG and WP7 this Summer

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, xblig, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

The 90s were filled with vertically-scrolling shooters, and I commonly find myself asking “what happened to them all?” Apparently developer Flump Studios overhead the many conversations I had with myself and figured it was about time they shined some light on the subject in the form of their upcoming shooter, Super Killer Hornet.

Back in the 90s we were also confined to having to play these games either at home on a console or away at the arcade. Luckily, you now have the choice of playing in the comfort of your own dwelling or on the go! Super Killer Hornet is flying onto XBLIG and Windows Phone 7 devices this summer.
