Radiangames Discounts its Entire Catalog to Celebrate JoyJoy’s Second Birthday

Posted on by Mike Wall in Mobile News, News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Queue up the ‘Happy Birthday’ song and get ready to fork over some royalties: Radiangames JoyJoy turns two years old today. The developer is celebrating its first game’s second birthday by throwing its entire catalog of 15 games on sale across various platforms.

  • Ballistic SE, Fireball SE, and Super Crossfire are all $.99 on iOS (normally $2.99).
  • Inferno+, Super Crossfire, Ballistic, Slydris, and Fireball are on sale for $1.99 on PC (normally $4.99)
  • JoyJoy, Crossfire, Inferno, Fluid, Fireball, Crossfire 2, and Ballistic are on sale for 80 MS points ($1) on Xbox Live Indie Games (normally 400 MS points ($5)).
  • The soundtracks to all of the games are also on sale for $.99 (normally $1.99).

The sales will end May 22, but the XBLIG versions will continue to be cheaper for longer because of Microsoft’s archaic policy restricting how often developers can adjust prices. Developer Luke Schneider remarked that they’d be on sale for “probably forever,” which suits us just fine. You may remember that most of the games were originally released at the $1 price point before being bumped up in the Bizarro Sale. If you’re stuck on the fence (seriously, over a $1 game?) check out our reviews of the XBLIG originals: JoyJoyCrossfire, Crossfire 2InfernoFluidBallistic and Fireball.

Dear Esther Celebrates its 100k Sales Milestone with 50% off Steam sale

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, PC News | Leave a comment

The psudo-game / artist portfolio project Dear Esther has broken the 100k sales mark this week, and to celebrate the team is offering the game for 50% off at Steam until 4 p.m. PST tomorrow. That’s $4.99 folks! If you happen to be on the cutting edge of trends and own a Mac, you’ll be glad to hear that you are on the winning side of this sale too.

While it may not offer much in terms of gameplay, it does place you within the confines of a carefully constructed story of a lost man on a deserted island, which is told through a beautifully detailed world. Think of it as Myst for the current generation. You remember Myst, right?

Syder Arcade – A Love Letter to a Genre That Welcomes It

Posted on by Dave Voyles in PC, PC Reviews, Reviews | Leave a comment

As a lifelong fan of shmups, I’ve played my fair share and come to the realization that it isn’t what initially catches your eye – the visual presentation – that counts as much the gameplay does. Fortunately for developer Studio Evil, it flies its most recent vessel, Syder Arcade with grace while excelling in both fields.

Syder Arcade’s strongest asset lies in its appearance, though its gameplay mechanics are nearly as lustrous. Throughout my trek across space, the framerate was consistent and the vivid explosions from enemy ships illuminated my screen with fluorescent colors. Vehicles and adversaries were all distinctly drawn, but at times I had a bit of difficulty discerning friend from foe, at least on the escort missions. Further adding to this confusion, was the fact that my weapons could also damage the vessel I was supposed to be guarding.

Upon loading the game I was also given the opportunity to select a very large number of filters to apply to the graphics that greatly changed the overall appearance of the game. I could select to have a cutting edge visual presentation from the current generation of gaming, while the next I could replicate it with a filter to replicate the look running the game on an Apple II or Commodore 64. The team clearly knew what they were doing when it came to designing the engine, and it shows.

Platformines is Ready to be Platformed in the Near Future

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Magiko Gaming is at it again, and has shed new light on the cave dwelling platformer they have been working on for “about 7 or 8 months,” Platformines. This marks the fifth release from the studio, whose most recent title Platformance: Temple Death was not only punishingly difficult and charming, but well received on XBLIG. You can get a peek at our review here without having to brave the traps and dangerous environments yourself.

Configuring inputs, tweaking, adding a bit more content and a coat of polish are all that remain on the developer’s list. “A typical game will last around 10 hours,” Magicko states, and since the world is randomly generated, multiple playthroughs are encouraged, so that should add a bit of replay value as well.

The premise is simple enough: build a monstrous digging machine, RoboDIG, by collecting 9 parts scattered throughout the world, each of which is located in an area more difficult than the last. Along the way you’ll acquire new weapons, some sweet wigs, and a variety of clothing and accessories. Nudists will be excited to hear that pants are optional. Read more

Miasma 2: Freedom Uprising Review: Tactically Delicious

Posted on by Dave Voyles in PC, PC Reviews, Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | Leave a comment

It isn’t every day that we get to review a sequel to an XBLIG game, as many developers often leave for greener pastures after one release or try something different. When afforded the opportunity to play the sequel to one of my favorite XBLIG games of 2010, however, I jumped at the opportunity.

I’m not going to get into a ton of detail about the gameplay because so much of it is similar to the previous incarnation that you can find most of the details in our past review of the first title. To sum it up quickly though, Miasma 2: Freedom Uprising is a grid and turned-based strategy game in which players take control of up to three characters on screen at once to fulfill a variety of objectives, including defending transmitters, neutralizing enemies, and reviving fallen comrades.

There are some noticeable differences over its predecessor however, including the character management screen between missions. Previously, all of your character upgrades were performed against a static backdrop, but this time around you are free to peruse a 3D environment via a first-person perspective. Similar to Mass Effect, your comrades are performing menial tasks throughout your base and you can engage in dialogue to further progress the story, upgrade their abilities, or hop to the next mission.

Superbrothers: Sword & Sworcery EP Review: Needz Moar Swords

Posted on by Mike Wall in PC, PC Reviews, Reviews | Leave a comment

Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP is an experimental amalgamation of music and video games where your lady-hero named “The Scythian” explores a surreal world in search of the three Trigons after discovering the all-powerful Megatome. A cigar-munching businessman dubbed the “Archetype” guides her throughout the journey. Trigons? Archetype? Megatome? Yup, this is a video game.

With its chunky retro visuals and unbelievable soundtrack, it’s easy to fall in love at first sight. Deny it all you want, but graphics are a huge component of video games, and Sword and Sworcery conjures the perfect mix of retro pixelated graphics and deliciously smooth animation. It’s just a shame the game portion wasn’t able to hold up its end of the bargain, and Sword and Sworcery constantly trips over its own artistic ambitions.

There is something to be said for a game that knows its audience, and Sword and Sworcery plays its geeky target fans like an 80s Casio keyboard. Everything about this game shrieks that it was created for someone with more than a passing knowledge of games who will soak in its not-so-subtle references to Zelda, Twitter synchronization, and self-referential erudite dialogue: “We were like, groan not another fetch quest amirite?” Read more

Free Community-Driven Dungeons of Dredmor DLC Hitting Steam Pipes “Very Soon”

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, PC, PC News | Leave a comment

Expansion packs and DLC have long been an avenue developers have pursued in order to keep gamers engaged in their product. In early times (circa the late 90s) expansion packs were often small additions to games which may have included new levels or a story line from the view of an alternate character. As of late, triple-A developers have begun to consider DLC before the retail game has even hit the store shelves (or digital ones), but indie developer Gaslamp Games has taken a different approach.

The most recent DLC for their PC hit Dungeons of Dremdmor is titled You Have to Name the Expansion Pack, and will be released “very soon.” Include are a breadth of new features, many of which are provided by modders within the community. Some highlights include:

  • Steam Workshop; mod integration with Steam! We’re turning it on! It’s Steamy!
  • Battle Geology, a wizard-like warrior skill with earth-shattering consequences by the terribly mysterious Null (how mysterious? terribly.)
  • Clockwork Knight and Rogue Scientist, a pair of crafty steampunk skill lines by the too-clever-by-half Ruigi
  • Warlockery, the wizard skill for wizards who would rather by warriors, by the utterly mad Essence — he wrote over 500 lines of xml for one spell.
  • A mess of twisty little rooms, all different, created by the deranged architect our mortal speech renders “Bergstrom“; The geometry is all wrong.
  • And to inhabit the renovated Dungeons of Dredmor we’ve summoned a pack of new monster variations dug up by one FaxCelestis, from the existentially troubling Poorly Cloned Hero to the lofty Diggle Rocketeer.

A few rounds of testing and connecting “all the Steam Workshop internet-pipes” are all that’s left before release. Players will have the ability to participate in the beta by heading over to Dredmor’s IRC channnel.

We’ll be sure to keep you in the loop when this community-focused piece of DLC hits the Steam pipes hard.
