Nine Dots Studio Brings Big Changes to Brand with Latest Patch

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

It seems as though developer Nine Dots Studio has listened keenly to the criticisms of its latest title, Brand, and taken them in stride. Today it announced an update that brings many changes to the title (along with a well produced video). Most of the updates correct a number of issues we had with the game, including the hero bouncing off of the monsters, loading times, and the inability to turn in midair. Now if only every game released a trailer as fun as this one with every patch…

Other notable alterations include:

  • Drastically improved the framerate
  • Implemented the content related to RocketHub contributions (custom statues, loading quotes)
  • It is now easier to switch side while attacking with quick attacks
  • Changed the title screen and main menu
  • Loading quotes are now cycling every 10 seconds during loading

You can find all of the patch notes here.

XBLIG New Release Roundup for The Week of January 29

Posted on by Mike Wall in Features, xblig | 5 Comments

We knew we shouldn’t have sold all our stock in voxels 2 years ago! We were a bit miffed when when Minecraft sold a billion copies, but now it’s downright embarrassing. It seems like every other game released is aping that blocky look. Yet, somehow, none of them managed to make it onto our recommended list for this week. Sadly, that won’t prevent them from showing up on the Top Downloaded list though. Without further blabbering, enjoy this week’s crop of demos to check out!

Katana Land – Dave

This 2D platformer gets all of the basics done right. Attacks are smooth, as are movement and animations, and it even offers a neat climbing mechanic. Your ninja can jump or drop to any platform, and the way the developer implemented it was done wonderfully. Katana Land is one of the best platformers I’ve seen on XBLIG in some time. Read more

Brand: A sword perhaps best left in the stone (for now)

The waiting game is often a tricky one. Sometimes an extended wait can lead to having some of your wildest expectations fulfilled, and then some. On the other end of that spectrum, however, lies disappointment. That doesn’t necessarily mean that what you had finally received was poor by any means, but it simply didn’t live up to what you were hoping for. Brand is one such title which unfortunately suffers the fate of the latter.

When we first got wind of it in August, Brand was seen as a beautifully textured and modeled platformer, with all signs pointing towards a hit: A rarity on XBLIG. In terms of appearance, it has fulfilled its end of the bargain and carries quite a bit of the weight for the rest of the product. The models are crisp, the textures and color palette are vivid, in addition to being diverse. Each of the three stages has its own distinct feel, despite being inhabited by many of the same enemies.

Brand Making its Mark on Xbox on February 2

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, xblig | 4 Comments

Brand has finally recovered from that nasty bug that delayed its release back in November, which means you’ll get a chance to slice up some manticores on February 2. Nine Dots Studio spent some of the extra time polishing up menus and adding in Avatar support, but we’re more excited to start shooting flame walls out of that upgradable sword. In the meantime, take another gander at that spiffy trailer.

Nine Dot Studios unleashes a new trailer for Brand

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

We’re going to go on the record and declare that more games need to let us battle manticores. The beasts have long been overshadowed by rote baddies like dragons and zombies, and it appears that Nine Dot Studios agrees since they’ve featured the crimson creature in the new trailer for their gothic hack ‘n slash, Brand.

Brand’s big selling point, aside from its spiffy 2.5D graphics, is the upgradeable sword. You can unlock 9 powers for the blade, and each power can be upgraded 5 times. Nine Dot is promising open-ended levels to explore and aims to release the game at end of September for 240 MS points. The studio is also considering a PC release on Steam, but it has no definite plans yet. Now can someone please make a game with chupacabras?
