Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet PC Port Includes Free DLC

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in News, PC, PC News | Leave a comment

Fuelcell Games has good news for PC enthusiasts looking forward to their port of Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. Joe Olson and Michel Gagne revealed that the Shadow Hunters DLC is going to be included at absolutely no extra charge on Nintendojo’s Airship Travelogues podcast.

The duo also said that while the game is finished, a release date has yet to be decided upon. Of course, keyboard and mouse controls plus Steam support will only make a good thing better for some, so it will likely be worth the wait.

Fuelcell Games shares details about Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet DLC

one of the game's gorgeous bosses

In a pre-PAX meeting with Joe Olson and ‘Scrapper’ of Fuelcell Games, the indie devs spilled some of the beans to Armless Octopus about the upcoming DLC for its beautiful adventure, Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. The expansion is going to take what the game did with the Lantern Run multiplayer and expand on it, significantly. Olson said the DLC will arrive “before Gears of War 3,” which is a twisted way of saying we’ll have our hands on it sometime in September.

Following the elimination of the shadow plague from the infected planet, you and your alien compatriots are going on the offensive to find and eliminate the dark threat. The dark plague has taken refuge in a belt of asteroids located near the planet, and in the DLC, you and up to three other shadow-fighting compatriots will take to the belt to find and drive back your mysterious adversary.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet review: Twisting art into games

so colorful!

Few of the things that Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet (ITSP for short) does as a game are original; the design embodies the Metroidvania stereotype. But when you play the game, even as you’re seeing all the tenants of that tried and true style – the squared map, the areas that are off limits until later, the inevitable upgrades to your arsenal – you are overwhelmed with novelty. While on one hand you can’t shake the feeling that this is an experience similar to that of games past, one absolute that takes hold early is that it’s an excellent game in its own right.

The main characteristic of ITSP that sets it apart is the art style and the game’s presentation. To put it simply, ITSP is a very, very beautiful game. I could likely spend the rest of the review just talking about the art and how wonderfully engaging and playful it is and I would still leave it underappreciated. The juxtaposition of the musical score with the art only enhances the experience. The game is broken up into clearly defined zones, each exhibiting its own style. The main elements are really the environments and the enemies and for each zone, with a unique approach taken to both for every area. In some cases they are one and the same, the environment being the enemy itself. Sometimes the relationship is covert, with polyps that emerge from what was just a desolate façade, but that are nevertheless bound to the walls of the planet. In other sections, the danger is mechanical: spinning saw blades and giant corkscrews looking to spear you. Over time, as you’ll realize, the whole planet is your enemy.

Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet preview: A surreal adventure in art

one of the game's gorgeous bosses

The darkness is coming. Over the celestial horizon you can see it growing closer, shattering planets as it approaches. The Shadow Planet spews a thoughtless thorny globule towards a star, and it engulfs it. The resulting nova showers the terra around you with darkness. Your only option is to defend yourself and your planet using your small, but highly upgradable UFO.

These are the first few beautiful scenes of Insanely Twisted Shadow Planet. The first thing that stands out is the visuals. All of the art is provided by Michel Gagné, acclaimed for his role as the lead artist for the movie The Iron Giant. His contribution shows; the visuals flow like there’s a current to them, highly contrasted between the dark foregrounds and the brighter, yet muted backgrounds. The introductory cinematic is made all the more poignant through the complete lack of dialogue or narration. This is an approach that continues through the remainder of the demo, and likely the retail version as well. The soundtrack, though there was a limited representation in the demo, showed itself well.
