Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

The college lacrosse season hasn’t started just yet, but don’t tell Crosse Studio, publisher of the last four lacrosse games that have appeared on XBLIG. Beginning Thursday, February 16 on their Facebook page, fans of lacrosse will have the opportunity to vote on College Lacrosse 2012′s cover art and design. Is it about time that lacrosse finally makes it up to the big leagues and onto additional platforms like XBLA and PSN? A recent interview with Inside Lacrosse reveals that it’s a possibility. When pegged with the question, studio founder Carlo Sunseri responded, “Yea, we’re working int [sic] the development of 2012, and in 2013 looking to get a big-time publisher behind the game, the NCAA, get the game out on Playstation, Wii and hopefully smart phones. That’s the game that’ll take the video game to the next level.” College Lacrosse 2012will be available on XBLIG by Memorial Day Weekend, the same weekend as the NCAA Championships, and retail for $5 (400 MS points).

NLL 11 review: Cherry picking the competition

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | 3 Comments

I know what you’re thinking: “Hey, didn’t they just review a lacrosse game?” Well yes we did; it was College Lacrosse 2011, and only two months ago at that. NLL 11 on the other hand, is the sequel to last year’s hit indoor lacrosse title, NLL Lacrosse 2010. This marks the first time publisher Crosse Studio has not teamed up with developer Triple B Games, and instead has chosen to go with Stir Fry Games, whose recent work includes SFG Office Brawlers, SFG Beach Volleyball, and SFG Soccer.

With the license from the National Lacrosse League, NLL 11 offers authentic players and teams to reflect the league’s current rosters. As a reviewer, it is an odd feeling to play a game that features a number of people I’ve played with or against in my lacrosse career, both in high school and in college. As lacrosse fans will surely agree, the ability to see players we’ve grown up watching finally appear in a game heightens  the immersion.

Xbox Indie Review: College Lacrosse 2011

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Reviews, xblig | 2 Comments

We’ve got a few more weeks before the frost begins to melt from the ground and the presence of grass is visible, but don’t tell that to Triple B Games. College lacrosse season may be about to commence, but the digital version started last Sunday. In their third lacrosse outing, College Lacrosse 2011, developer Triple B Games teamed up with Cross Studios to create what is their best piece of work yet.

Huge improvements have been made in nearly every department. The animations offer smoother transitions as players switch hands or perform dodges. Goalies now fall to one knee as they perform Herculean efforts  to protect their cage at all costs. The developer took the time to motion cap 500 different animations, and their effort really shows. You won’t see any of the animations from the previous games, which while not terrible, are greatly improved and look more professional in this iteration. These technical innovations, although minor in the grand scheme of things, are what separate this title from the others in indie catalog. Screenshots don’t do this game justice, which is a shame considering that’s what I believe leads to most of the indie game sales. While most gamers probably won’t even recognize the work that is required to go under the hood and create a game as technically sharp as this, those of us who do appreciate it.

NLL Lacrosse 2010

Well, what can be said about NLL Lacrosse 2010 that I didn’t say about Inside Lacrosse 2010? Quite honestly, they are nearly the same game. If you’ve got some change you can scrounge around the couch cushions for and loved the last game, then by all means pick this one up.

Graphically, the game has received a bit of a touch-up, but Inside Lacrosse wasn’t the best looking title either. Characters seem to have a few more animations than Inside Lacrosse; however, because the characters are not motion captured – and I’m by no means knocking them for that – the movements still feel a bit stiff, despite the fact that the upper and lower portions of the players’ bodies operate on different planes. Furthermore, the textures appear sharper than the predecessor as well.

Xbox Indie Review: Inside Lacrosse College Lacrosse 2010

Inside Lacrosse College Lacrosse

If you are a lacrosse player, or a fan of the game, stop what you’re doing, hop on XBLA, and check out this title. As a lifelong player, you can only imagine my joy when I saw there was an indie lacrosse game available for the Xbox 360.  Sure the graphics look abysmal, but the fact of the matter is that it IS a lacrosse game, and it’s NOT Blast Lacrosse.
