Xbox Indie Review: Alpha Squad

manly men.

Are you a manly man? Do you wear belts made out of beef jerky and sweat whiskey from your pores? Would you like to slaughter armies of freedom-oppressing soldiers, machine-gun-wielding gorillas and puddles of incarnate slime with a huge arsenal of weapons? What if you could do that while simultaneously oogling ridiculously large-breasted women in skimpy, revealing outfits and rocking out to some wailing guitar solos?

In case you can’t tell, Alpha Squad doesn’t have much time for subtlety. Its title screen features the musclebound cast of rag-tag mercenaries brandishing their enormous firearms in front of a burning city accompanied by its metal theme song. It gloriously revels in every aspect of over-the-top 80s action movies; it’s dumb, it’s obnoxious, it’s sexist and it’s can be quite a bit of fun, when it isn’t being hampered by some infuriating flaws.

Xbox Indie Review: Snailien Invasion

snails!

If this is supposed to be an invasion, then I think my snail wandered onto the wrong battlefield; it’s more like a one-snail assault. Snailien Invasion shows a lot of promise, but ultimately gets squished by it’s unfortunate fixation on multiplayer combat in the vacuum that is the Xbox indie landscape.

Snailien Invasion (go ahead and say it again – Snailien Invasion) is basically an amped-up version of Worms. It strips out the turn-based elements that make some rounds of Worms a snooze-fest and morphs the concept into an arena-based 2D action game. Despite its glaring similarities, the pacing and the feel of the game are so different that it doesn’t feel like a ripoff at all. Perhaps in a different reality (one where snails form armies) and with a handful of tweaks, this game would get the attention it deserves. If you’re a college student or have a bunch of friends around, you’ll probably really get a kick out of the local multiplayer. But for the rest of us folk in the real world, it faces the catch-22 conundrum of requiring an online community to be fun, and thus it’s impossible to recommend purchasing because said community doesn’t already exist.

Xbox Indie Review: Avatar Karate

avatars do battle!

Have you ever wanted to high-kick Kayne, bitch-slap Paris, or karate-chop the Governator? Well, now you can fight your favorite celebrity Avatars in Avatar Karate. You’ll unlock new opponents and locations as you work your way through each stage. There are 20 celebrity opponents in all; some appear as characters they’ve played and others appear as themselves. While the developer never outright names each celebrity by name, they’re fairly easy to identify by the lines they quote or through other pop-culture references.

The moves are simple: a variety of kicks, punches, jumps, and blocks. While the opponents get more difficult in single player mode, your Avatar doesn’t seem to level up or acquire any additional skills making the last few fights challenging. There 4 locations in the game, but all are fairly limiting and you are only allowed to fight in a portion of the screen. Read more

Xbox Indie Review: Square Off

explosions!

With mobs of bloodthirsty aliens pushing humanity to the brink of extinction, one man – and one man alone – has the solution to preserve life as we know it. In order to save the planet, we need to create a race of colorful alien-human hybrids using brain samples from an institutionalized scientist. Bizarre premise? Undoubtedly. Perfect execution? Totally.

Square Off perfectly combines highly detailed cartoony graphics with addictive 2D shooting. The result is a surprisingly accessible game and an extremely fun multiplayer experience that ranks up there with Castle Crashers, Bomberman Live and Rock Band.

Xbox Indie Review: Hurdle Turtle

dinos and turtles

I really needed a game like Hurdle Turtle. My brain actually had to bribe my hands to pick up a controller again after the muscle-cramping disgrace of Avatar Ninja and the totally uninspired cash-in, The American Hot Dog Race, and I was in dire need of some good old-fashioned retro-game loving. Hurdle Turtle thankfully delivers and is the total nostalgic package, complete with authentic 8-bit sprites, chiptune music and of course, quarter-munching difficulty.  The namesake hero is a delightfully designed reptile donning a white cotton headband and sweatbands on all his tiny turtle feet. As his name indicates, he’s a bit of a track and field fan, and the purpose of the game is to survive as long as possible on three increasingly difficult courses. It’s a simple game to understand, yet it’s surprisingly fun and becomes quite difficult in a hurry.

There are two types of obstacles that must be avoided: one that can be bypassed by guiding the turtle up and down on the track and another that has to leapt over.  Every few seconds the turtle’s velocity increases and in short time, the obstacles are flying at our poor little reptile friend. Turtles can apparently get those stubby legs moving at an enviable pace, which means that avoiding the obstacles becomes no easy feat.

Four survivors escape in Zombie Apocalypse

Zombies?  Check.  Apocalypse?  Uh-huh.  Violence?  Yip.  At the moment this seems to be the winning formula for a successful title.  While not every title which holds these qualities is a winner (I’m talking about you, Yet Another Zombie Defense), thus far Left 4 Dead 1 & 2, Plants Vs. Zombies, and Dead Rising have all proven to be hits.

XBLA Review: Final Fight: Double Impact

Cody and Guy beat some jerks up

The bones of my knuckles protrude through the dilapidated tatters of my crimson-stained skin.  A cool evening breeze carries away the reeking scent of my singed hair and charred clothes.   My thoughts are a jumbled mess, floating around inside my concussed cranium.  A mile-long trail of unconscious thugs chronicles our path through the city, but at long last, our mission has reached its conclusion.  The mayor’s daughter is safe again.

“I won’t let anything bad happen to you again” Mike Haggar promises his young blonde daughter as he clenches her close to his massive, muscled chest.  You said it, big buddy; you said it.  No way could this ever happen again.

Xbox Indie Review: Tank Strike

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, xblig | Leave a comment

Tank Strike lets you use squids for tanks!

Tanks inhabit a special place in the minds of small boys and tough schoolyard girls far and wide.  One of the most deadly killing machines known to man, tanks are mobile steel fortresses capable of rumbling across nearly any terrain, decimating buildings and rolling straight over its adversaries.  Who wouldn’t want a tank parked next to their sports car or monster truck?

On top of this death machine rests a massive 120mm cannon designed to create doodie stains on whatever is caught between its sights.  They plow through fields, deserts and city streets with 1500 horsepower of diesel-guzzling power.

Except, what’s this?  Oh no!  Your treads have disappeared!  Blown off by enemy rockets?  Disintegrated with a toxic acid?  Eaten by tread-munching vermin?  Who knows?  But it’s time to do battle!
