Kittens Spit Fire When Serious Sam Double D XXL Assaults XBLA This Fall

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, XBLA, XBLA News | Leave a comment

Take a long, hard look at you what is on your screen right now. Yes, that’s a kitten, spitting hot fire. Whether or not it is as hot as Dylan’s is irrelevant, but it does tell us something, and that something is the autumn release of Serious Sam Double D XXL on XBLA. Mommy’s Best Games, in coordination with Devolver Digital, will be porting 2011’s Serous Sam Double D from Steam, but that’s not all.

In addition to fire-breathing kittens, two-player local co-op will be included, as well as even MORE weapons for the already over-the-top gunstacker. Speaking of guns, apparently 8 wasn’t enough before, because now there are 40 different types of guns.

There will be all kinds of destruction, when SSDDXXL (whew!) hits this fall for 800 MSP ($10). In the meantime, you can watch our video review of the original PC game.

Serious Sam Double D was provided for review by Mommy’s Best Games, and it is available on Steam for $7.99.

Serious Sam Double D gets serious about release with new trailer

Posted on by Mike Wall in PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Mommy’s Best Games has unleashed a new trailer demonstrating the sheer insanity and absurdity of Serious Sam Double D. Did you see the lava monster on the pogo stick? How about the gigantic gorilla with the circular-saw hand? The enormous hamster with the studded choker and missile launchers built into its torso? Double D will be assaulting PC in August (the Xbox version will be released a few months later), so we should have our chance to eradicate mutant monsters with ridiculous duct-taped instruments of death in a few short weeks. We’ll update you with more details on the specifics of the release as they’re available, but in the meantime, check out our hands-on impressions with this bloodbath.

XBLIG developers can now choose their release date

control your destiny

Big news on the XBLIG front today, as Microsoft announced via the App Hub that Xbox Live Indie developers would now have the ability to “control the release of their games that have passed peer review.” This is a step in the correct direction, both in terms of marketing and public relations. One of the key elements missing from the Indie Games Winter Uprising was the fact that many developers missed their target release dates. Should the event ever occur again, that issue would be washed away as long as the titles pass peer review in time.

Most developers seem to be excited over the matter. Nathan Fouts of Mommy’s Best Games shouted “Great News!” on Twitter, while Ben Kane of declared “This is going to wreak havoc with the new release list. It’ll be a game of chicken on every Friday. Overall, fantastic news though.” Robert Boyd of Zeboyd Games shared the same sentiment with “The news made my day. This’ll make building hype for games much easier.” Evan Johnson wasn’t as enthusiastic with, “Probably should have been there from the start, but good to see it happen,” although he appreciated the change nonetheless.

Serious Sam Double D upgrades to hex-wielding

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

so much death

Way back in March, quad-wielding seemed like it was the hot new thing. Four guns stapled together was surely a sufficient arsenal to mow down even the nastiest of biomechanical monstrosities, right? Boy, how naive were we? Mommy’s Best Games has added an additional 50% slaying power to the already formidable Gunstacker found in its upcoming alien bloodbath, Serious Sam Double D.

The new contraption will allow you to stack up to six guns into an outreagous tower of destruction, including multiple iterations of the same weapon. The Gunstacker is now comprised of individual connectors and guns that are found throughout the game, and a new inventory system allows you to configure numerous deadly combinations of weapons for the game’s pugnacious, titular hero.

“We wanted it to be excessive–more than any other game (like more than a quad-barreled shotgun in some games) but we’ve already tried out 8 and 12, and more in a stack and it’s … a little too much (believe it or not). We may have temporary powerup or cheat for that though!” developer Nathan Fouts told Armless Octopus.

With 8 to 10 weapons planned for the game and 4 copies of each weapon scattered throughout the levels, there are sure to be some outrageous contrivances. Anyone else looking forward to wielding 4 shotguns and a chainsaw?

Serious Sam Double D preview: Quadruple the insanity

he's got firepower

There are about a billion games that provide a massive arsenal that can be used to create legions of orphaned alien babies, but how do you cope with all of the choices? How do you handle the stress of determining if today is a shotgun day or an Uzi day? Serious Sam has obliterated those stressful decisions with a ridiculous contraption called the Gunstacker. Soak it in, ladies and gentlemen (okay, probably mostly gentlemen). The Gunstacker allows Sam to wield not twice, not thrice, but frice quadruple the firepower of those boring old games! It’s the ultimate tower of power that stacks four weapons into an unwieldy Erector Set of death.

I admittedly don’t have much experience with the Serious Sam franchise, but after playing through the one-level demo of Serious Sam Double D, developer Nate Fouts’ enthusiasm for working with the character was evident. Double D is a 2D run-and-gun shooter made by Mommy’s Best Games; think of it as Contra with a demented sense of humor. The version I played was pretty early, and while the quantity of enemies, weapons and levels is still up in the air, the game shows a lot of promise.

GDC 2011: Successful indie developers share insight on Microsoft’s self-publishing service

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News | 4 Comments

On the final day of GDC, a bustling, excited room of journalists, students, and fellow developers listened acutely as James Silva, Robert Boyd, Nathan Fouts, and Ian Stocker recounted their trials, tribulations and successes as Xbox Live Indie Game developers. Brandon Sheffield, Editor-In-Chief of Gamasutra and Game Developer Magazine hosted the panel of accomplished indie developers and guided them through the discussions.

One of the largest hurdles for indie developers is exposure. Before releasing I MAED A GAM3 W1TH ZoMBIES!!!1, Silva (Ska Studios) put out a press release riddled with nonsense such as “Hypermagic Engine 3.0 and the Megacore X parallelization processor.” This later went on a wiki which he released for his title, but essentially it provided synergy across the tone of his promotional material, as well as the game itself. Most importantly, it allowed the press to refer to something when building details for a story.

“Something as simple as a website can provide essential legitimacy” said Boyd (Zeboyd Games), who also suggested creating YouTube trailers.

cthulhu saves the world shirt

Though there isn’t any indication on how we can get our hands on one, Robert Boyd just posted two photos of himself wearing a new Zeboyd Games/Cthulu Saves the World T-shirt. He will be wearing one for increased visibility during his visit at the 2011 Game Developer’s Conference later this month.

If you plan on attending the conference, you don’t want to miss the XBLIG Success Stories panel that Boyd will be speaking at. The panel will discuss various questions about achieving success on the XBLIG platform, and the other guests include Brandon Sheffield of Game Developer Magazine, Nathan Fouts of Mommy’s Best Games, Inc., Ian Stocker of MagicalTimeBean, and James Silva of Ska Studios. The panel takes place on Friday, March 4 at 2 P.M. in the South Hall at Moscone Center.

Check out the rest of Boyd’s post to see the other panels he plans on attending if you’d like to stalk him.
