XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of April 22

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Features, xblig | Leave a comment

Whether you want to hunt for crystals like you’re Indiana Jones or knock out internet memes like you are Little Mac back in ’89, this week’s XBLIG roundup has a bit of everything.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Crystal Hunters - Anthony

Consider me shocked by this one.  Crystal Hunters is very likely the best game released on the service in all of April.  It’s a room-based puzzler in the vein of The Adventures of Lolo, which you might remember from the NES.  Gem collecting is the objective here.  You’ll need to push boxes on to switches to open doors and exits.  You can also slide them into the view of enemies who will shoot to kill if you cross their line of sight.  Forethought and careful planning are a prerequisite here — looks elsewhere for twitch-based high-octane gaming.

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of April 15

In this third week of April we have quite a mixed bag. The beautiful Super Stardust-eqsue Retribution hits the marketplace as does yet another title from Milkstone Studios (do those guys ever sleep?) in the form of Firing Range 2. Those of you who need to satisfy their itch for speed and explosive vehicles can find solace in Unnecessary Violence, while those who only crave the speed part will be pleased the unique gameplay Drive Fast Think Faster delivers.

Firing Range 2 – Dave

Milkstone Studios is a developer known for their impressive visuals and solid presentations, and they manage to maintain that notion here. This follow up to last year’s title has you controlling a stationary character in a first person perspective as you fire upon targets, and are awarded for speed and accuracy. I could see fans of Call of Duty and Battlefield series finding plenty of value here.

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Weeks of April 1 and 8

This week is all about the crazy knock-offs on Xbox Live Indie Games. We get a wacky-ass WarioWare game, an Excite Bike game with Avatars, a Sim City-ish experience and a Rock Band game for just drums. Who said there was no creativity on XBLIG…?

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Vidiot GameDan

To say this game is cut from a different cloth is an understatement. Vidiot Game is strongly reminiscent of the WarioWare series while presenting its own unique and style and charm. We recommend you try it out, but for more information make sure you check out our video review. Read more

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of March 25

This week’s deluge of new releases is a video game buffet for indie fans. Just about everyone should be able to find something they want to sample, whether they’re into racing games, classic arcade games, tower defense, or games where you sell rocks. No zombies though. Seriously. What the hell is going on, Xbox Live Indie Games? Explain yourself!

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Red Invasion: Tower Defense – Mike

This is one of the best, if straightforward, tower-defense games on XBLIG. The presentation is slick, the graphics are gorgeous, and there appear to be a ton of levels to play. There are plenty of tower defense games out there that feel cheaply made, but this one really feels solid, and I really appreciate the fast forward button, which some games are sorely missing. The only knock against it, at least from the demo, is that it seems a bit formulaic. I built my defensive turrets for ground units, my anti-air ones for the flying enemies, and my energy units to keep the money flowing. Not exactly groundbreaking, but solid, and there are plenty of units that are unavailable in the demo.  Read more

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of March 18

You know it’s a good week when more than half of the new releases leave a lasting impression, which basically makes this the best week of indies of the whole year. There’s a lot of variety in the new releases from board games to 2D platformers to party games, but pretty much everyone should be able to find something they like with this lineup.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Super Ninja Warrior Extreme – Dave
Despite its simplistic 8-bit appearance, this game offers quite a bit in the form of precise controls. Your actions are recognized instantly, and your character moves gracefully as he slices and dices his way through enemies and avoids obstacles. An absolute must try, if not immediate buy. XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of March 11

Zombies, fish, cats, dinosaurs, and oil tycoons: yup, this week of XBLIG new releases has all of your bases covered.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

My Cats vs. Zombies Ep I – Mike “After the zombie apocalypse and the fall of mankind, cats had to find a new way to survive.” That line kind of sums up what My Cats vs. Zombiesis in one succinct sentence. Shockingly, this game is more than just a handful of cat pics thrown into a game; it’s a fully fleshed-out, feline, zombie, twin-stick, role-playing game. Yeah, it’s already won the award for most adjectives used to describe a game this year. The combat is a little vanilla, but an abundance of silly dialogue kept me more than entertained through the entire demo. Read more

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Weeks of February 26 & March 4

Two weeks of games and what do we wind up with? Three voxel-based crafting games and an assortment of shooters. Oh, and a game about a car wash. Well, at least the latter one is original, even if washing cars is right up there with the librarian simulator for the “most riveting game of the year” award. Enjoy the demos!

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Astral – Mike

Astral is kind of like a real-time version of Risk except with a cosmic backdrop. Each of the planets have glowing satellites that orbit around it, and you have to send the satellites toward other planets to take them over. It has a simple presentation, but the stars and planets really pop out from the stark black background, and the level of strategy involved increased as more planets were thrown into the mix. It does feel a bit slow, at least during the demo, but the fantastic dynamic soundtrack kept me engaged the whole time. Read more

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of February 19

Let’s talk about zombies, shall we? Look, The Walking Dead is the hottest show on TV. Dead Island was a pretty big hit last year. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies is being made into a freaking movie. But we only got 3 zombie XBLIG games this week. Three measly games? That’s less than 40% of the new releases. Simply unacceptable.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Cro-Mag Rally Extreme! – Mike

Imagine Mario Kart with a Flinstones twist and you’ll wind up with Cro-Mag Rally. It’s a straightforward kart racer that seems to stick with what works, but executes quite impressively. The racing is fast and furious, and the framerate (at least in the single player) is solid. It has the familiar power-up system from Mario Kart, with a slightly larger emphasis placed on kart-to-kart kombat. Also, the game doesn’t get too entrenched with the caveman theme and has karts and levels from different time periods including Vikings, Egyptians, and even Atlantis. Read more
