Retro City Rampage Soundtrack Now Available on Vinyl and Bandcamp

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC News, PSN News, XBLA News, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Are you prepared for when Retro City Rampage attacks whatever console you own this May? Do you have your TV set up in your wood-panelled basement? Do you have an ample supply of Pepsi and Doritos? Have you started growing your rat tail again? Have you replaced the needle on your record player? Good, because the soundtrack to the upcoming 8-bit GTA-inspired game has just been released on vinyl.

The soundtrack features tunes by Freaky DNA, virt, and Norrin Radd, and the vinyl release is limited to 500 copies. Audiophiles should be pleased to note that they’re pressed on 180g vinyl, and the first 200 copies are pressed in Horizon Blue and Green Sapphire, while the remaining 300 are boring old black. Each copy also includes a CD case and a digital copy from Bandcamp, or you can also purchase just the digital copy.

The album will run you $39, and can be purchased from the Retro City Rampage store.

Retro City Rampage preview: This is your father’s GTA

so 8-bit! As I perused my way through the streets, I couldn’t help but wonder what it would be like to have that hot sports car stopped at the traffic light ahead. Instead of wondering, I just jacked the driver from his seat and called it my own. I know what you’re thinking,”I’ve been doing this for years in the Grand Theft Auto series.” Not like this you haven’t.

In my new automobile I passed somewhat familiar places, including a pub I’m sure I must have stopped at some point In my GTA adventures. That’s not what caught my eye: it was the glowing Jimmy and Bimmy’s sign hanging above the next bar, a nod to the poor translation of early Nintendo titles like Double Dragon. It’s the charm like this scattered throughout my experience that kept me thoroughly engaged. Whipping around the next corner, all the while carelessly trampling unsuspecting civilians, another sign glimmered in the corner of my eye: “Fabi-o’s” in the fashion of a cereal box but with the handsome hunk best known for his flowing locks. In my distracted gaze I failed to pay attention and struck another pedestrian, sandwiching him between my vehicle and a narrow brick structure. Whoops. Read more

Interview: Brian Provinciano, creator of Retro City Rampage

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Interviews, XBLA | 2 Comments

I had a chance to chat with Brian Provinciano of Vlank Entertainment, best known for his upcoming title Retro City Rampage, the 8-bit GTA game that started out on a hacked NES and is now set to debut on XBLA this summer.

So Brian, why don’t you tell us a bit about yourself and the game briefly before I really start to grill you with questions?

Brian: Well I’m a game developer who pretty much does everything from the programming to the art, design, and business – definitely wearing the indie hat for sure. I used to work in the industry for many years, and before that I was a hobbyist, or “indie” before the term was coined. I’ve been working on Retro City Rampage, or at least a retro-style GTA game for…..wow…..over seven years now, and I went full time about two years ago and have just been plugging away, and it will come out on Xbox Live this summer and WiiWare this fall.

So what finally pushed you over from being a part-time indie developer, I guess a “garage” developer as Reggie from Nintendo would say, to something full time?

Brian: Well I really believed in the project. It really was, and is, my passion. It’s something I’ve wanted to do for a long time but, I was just scared. Giving up my security with a day job and the health benefits – all of that stuff; a mortgage included. So in those years I was saving up and all of my money was going in my bank account with the idea that I would pull the trigger one day and work on this full time. Eventually I did, it was definitely the right decision – I’m so glad I did it. It’s not without a lot of risk and scary times though. There were moments of doubt here and there but you’ve just got to push through.
