Lone Survivor is Now Available on PC and Mac

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC News | Leave a comment

After four apparently arduous years in development, Superflat Games’ Lone Survivor is finally finished and is now available for $10 on Mac & PC. Surreal doesn’t even begin to describe the trailer for this post-apocalyptic adventure where you play as a boy questioning his grip on reality as he escapes from an infected city. The trailer quickly devolves from a somber, reflective tone into a twisted trip that would make H.R. Geiger proud. A $50 First Aid Edition is also available that includes a signed art print, soundtrack, and access to the LS3D beta. If you’re too scared to lay down the cash, you can check out the free demo.

Retro Arcade Adventure Review: Satiating the Retro Itch

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | 1 Comment

Siactro has crafted a game with fantastic aesthetics in Retro Arcade Adventure. The gameplay occupies the shallow end of the pool, however, creating an experience more like Marco Polo than Water Polo.

That’s not to say Marco Polo can’t be fun. You just can’t go into Retro Arcade Adventure expecting a challenging game. There’s heavy emphasis on the “arcade” part of the title – this one is more Smash TV than The Legend of Zelda - despite the thoughtfully-illustrated fantasy graphics. You take control of a lone hero on his quest to dispatch a malevolent demon hellbent on enslaving his homeland. You’ll slash through wave upon wave of enemies in order to reach and vanquish your foe. EvilQuest Review: B-b-b-b-b Bad to the Bone

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, XBLIG Reviews | Leave a comment

He-Man may have routinely embarrassed his skeletal counterpart on TV, but in my house, the muscly Master of the Universe was more likely to find himself colliding against the neighbor’s brick wall. Perhaps I took pity on incompetent villains who always managed to shoot themselves in the feet at the last minute, or maybe I just thought they looked cooler, but I found myself cheering for the bad guys like they were some kind of slightly maniacal version of Rudy.

It’s kind of hard to root for the bad guys in games unless you’re a fan of the ‘Game Over’ screen, but EvilQuest is the rare game that puts you squarely in the shoes of a detestable and indefensible deviant. It doesn’t merely present the option of being a bastard, it outright demands it, which is a pretty refreshing approach for a game. Unfortunately, like those incompetent 80s cartoon villains, EvilQuest finds a few ways to sabotage itself and derail the fun, but it’s still one of the more impressive indies we’ve seen in a while.

To The Moon Video Review

Posted on by Daniel Campbell in PC, PC Reviews, Reviews | 3 Comments

To The Moon is an independent title that has been getting a lot of mainstream attention, but does it deserve it? Does the game really impress enough to warrant a top 10 entry? Or is this game simply a pretentious hipster’s dream that has caused widespread lunacy? Get it?! Lunacy!?… To the MOON =Lunar? HA HA HA H! …………fine! Just watch the damn video.

To The Moon was provided for review by Freebird Games. You can purchase it on their website for $11.95.

Dead Pixels Review: River City Zombie Rampage

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | 4 Comments

I love zombies. I understand that as a snarky, sarcastic game critic I’m supposed to be over the undead fad and complain about how I can walk into Walmart and buy zombie sheets, but I just don’t care. I love their little rotting faces, I love their slow, shambling strides, and I love their eat-anything-that-gets-in-their-path attitude. I also love shooting holes in them as I flee down city streets.

Dead Pixels is the latest to the undead XBLIG party, but it’s way more than just a cash-in to take advantage of the undead walkers’ lingering popularity. This is a fully fleshed-out 8-bit zombie grindhouse romp that oozes love and authenticity from every crevice like coagulating blood oozes from the face wounds of fallen zombies. It’s like a mix of Double Dragon and Left 4 Dead, and it’s almost as awesome as that dream-team combination sounds.

Jamestown: Legend of the Lost Colony review: Just like the history books

Posted on by Mike Wall in PC, PC Reviews | Leave a comment

monster!

From mechanized Hitler robots to undersea scientific societies, video games have long enjoyed chronicling the tales that history books thought best to omit. Jamestown continues this tradition as it follows the adventures of the 17th century explorer, Raleigh, a fugitive of the English crown who fled to the New World to discover what happened to the lost colony of Roanoke and clear his name. Except by “New World,” we mean the floating islands of Mars, and by “discover” we really mean hop in his tiny spaceship and annihilate the combined forces of the Spanish Conquistadors and the tentacled aliens.

The premise is unapologetically absurd, but beneath the goofy narrative, Final Form Games has crafted an homage to 90s shooters that would look perfect in a dusky arcade wedged between Raiden and Giga Wing cabinets. That’s not to say it’s a banal adventure (did you read the part about the Spanish-Martian alliance?), but the colorful, gorgeously-drawn sprites and frenetic action channels everything that was so satisfying about 90s gaming. It might not stray too far from that familiar vertically-scrolling path, but the Vaunt system, its stellar multiplayer and the various unlockables help it feel fresh. The hodgepodge sci-fi-history narrative captures the Firefly feel of old mixed with new, and it plays the story so seriously, not once acknowledging how outlandish the premise is as it unfolds through pixelated cutscenes.

Xbox Indie Review: Hurdle Turtle Level Pack #1

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, xblig | Leave a comment

smack!

The first Hurdle Turtle was a delightful, though sort of disposable game in which a cute-as-can-be turtle raced  through three quirky, 8-bit tracks. It was a fun little distraction and oozed undeniable retro charm, but it wasn’t the kind of game that you’d want to play for more than ten minutes at a time due to its simplicity. Now our favorite amped-up amphibian has strapped on the sweatband for a victory lap, and the results are pretty much the same.

This isn’t so much a level pack as it is a re-skinned version of the original game. It has the same frenetic, but accessible gameplay and awesome 8-bit graphics and music, but it lacks any enhancements or alterations to the actual gameplay. It is the same three levels with different backgrounds and music. So, if you haven’t played the original or were absolutely smitten with it, by all means pick up this game, but if you were only moderately amused by it and were hoping for some real innovation, you’re going to want to wait for the next track meet.
