Flowrider Review: Keeping Ahead of the Flow

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | Leave a comment

Triple B Games has historically been known for their sports titles, including Fitba and a slew of well-received lacrosse titles, before they took their obligatory crack at zombies with Zombiez 8 My Cookiez. The Scotland-based developer continues to diversify their portfolio with the recent release of their racing title, Flowrider. Surprisingly, there aren’t many racing titles on XBLIG, so it was about time a good one made its way into the marketplace.

As I played through Flowrider, thoughts of RC Pro-AM, a solid racer from the days of the NES, ran through my mind. Both titles share a similar camera, small vehicles, and sense of speed. Those of you who have played the XBLA title Hydro Thunder will feel right at home with this as well, as the water-based physics allow the boats to glide across the surface, remiss of the friction we’ve come to know and expect in our everyday lives.

Xbox Indie Review: College Lacrosse 2011

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Reviews, xblig | 2 Comments

We’ve got a few more weeks before the frost begins to melt from the ground and the presence of grass is visible, but don’t tell that to Triple B Games. College lacrosse season may be about to commence, but the digital version started last Sunday. In their third lacrosse outing, College Lacrosse 2011, developer Triple B Games teamed up with Cross Studios to create what is their best piece of work yet.

Huge improvements have been made in nearly every department. The animations offer smoother transitions as players switch hands or perform dodges. Goalies now fall to one knee as they perform Herculean efforts  to protect their cage at all costs. The developer took the time to motion cap 500 different animations, and their effort really shows. You won’t see any of the animations from the previous games, which while not terrible, are greatly improved and look more professional in this iteration. These technical innovations, although minor in the grand scheme of things, are what separate this title from the others in indie catalog. Screenshots don’t do this game justice, which is a shame considering that’s what I believe leads to most of the indie game sales. While most gamers probably won’t even recognize the work that is required to go under the hood and create a game as technically sharp as this, those of us who do appreciate it.

Xbox Indie Review: Zombiez 8 My Cookiez

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Reviews, xblig | 3 Comments

Forget what you’ve been trained to know for the impeding zombie apocalypse. Developer Triple B Games has a different vision for the future, one where zombies aren’t seeking brains as we’ve been lead to believe, but cookies!

In Zombiez 8 My Cookiez, players take control of a matchbox-sized tank in charge of defending a plate full of cookies located at the center of the dinner table. Hordes of zombies approach with reckless abandon and one goal in mind – snatch and grab those cookies. As players begin to dismantle the undead by using either the default machine gun or shotgun style weapons, the zombies will drop alternative weapons including a flamethrower and lightning bolt power-up which turns the tank into a roaming ball of fury, capable of taking out an enemy just by touch.

We’ve been fooled: zombies want cookies, not brains

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News | 1 Comment

As I feverishly fight off my attackers with whatever makeshift weapon I can scrounge up, I come to a startling realization – these zombies are not after my brains, but my cookies! Or at least that’s what developer Triple B Games wants you to think. A preview released for their current work in progress Zombiez 8 My Cookiez quickly garnered over 1,000 hits in under 24 hours. Take a look for yourself and you can see why.

Players guide a matchbox-like tank as it fends off invading zombie hordes like ants who are headed for his plate of cookies on his dinner table. Players blast them, fry them, burn them, and launch them off the kitchen table just to keep those decrepit zombie mitts from our favorite satisfying treat.

When you’re not fighting off hordes of the undead, why not spend a bit of time playing some of Triple B’s other titles, like NLL Lacrosse 2010?

NLL Lacrosse 2010

Well, what can be said about NLL Lacrosse 2010 that I didn’t say about Inside Lacrosse 2010? Quite honestly, they are nearly the same game. If you’ve got some change you can scrounge around the couch cushions for and loved the last game, then by all means pick this one up.

Graphically, the game has received a bit of a touch-up, but Inside Lacrosse wasn’t the best looking title either. Characters seem to have a few more animations than Inside Lacrosse; however, because the characters are not motion captured – and I’m by no means knocking them for that – the movements still feel a bit stiff, despite the fact that the upper and lower portions of the players’ bodies operate on different planes. Furthermore, the textures appear sharper than the predecessor as well.

Inside Lacrosse College Lacrosse

If you are a lacrosse player, or a fan of the game, stop what you’re doing, hop on XBLA, and check out this title. As a lifelong player, you can only imagine my joy when I saw there was an indie lacrosse game available for the Xbox 360.  Sure the graphics look abysmal, but the fact of the matter is that it IS a lacrosse game, and it’s NOT Blast Lacrosse.
