New Miasma 2 Footage Tactically Unveils First Person Segment

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, xblig | Leave a comment

Sinister corporations tend to be a bit obstinate when it comes to changing their nefarious ways or closing up shop entirely. Heck, sometimes it can take several sequels before they finally take the hint. Vilhelm Industries will return to reprise its role as the freedom-hating enterprise later this year in Miasma 2. ESP Games recently released a lengthy video walking through the combat and introducing some of the new features it has implemented in hopes to improve on its predecessor.

There’s a new first-person mode in between levels where you can walk around and talk to your squad and do other RPG things like steal everyone’s prized possessions upgrade your characters. Developer David Addis explains that they’ve remixed the combat from the first game and calls the sequel a “turn-based planning game.” Basically that means that you’ll input the commands for your team in between each round and then watch the melee unfold over the course of a few seconds and repeat until one team is zipped up in body bags. Older PC junkies might see some similarities to the D&D Gold Box games. We’ll find out for sure when Miasma 2 comes to Xbox Live Indie Games later this year.

Contest is closed! Thanks to everyone who entered, and congrats to Jody Owsley (@viper1829) on winning. Okay, admit it. It’s fun to be bad. It’s okay, we won’t tell your parents. We don’t want them thinking they raised you to be some kind of hooligan or something. But acting our your maniacal powertrip fantasies in a video game like EvilQuest? That’s perfectly normal. And if there is anything better than paying a measly buck for a darned good game, it’s getting a darned good game for free. That’s why we’re going away a copy of EvilQuest for Xbox courtesy of Chaosoft Games.

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of January 15

Posted on by Mike Wall in Features, xblig | Leave a comment

Zombies, Russians, spaceships and robot cowboys? Heck of a strange week for the old indies, as evidenced by a Christmas game that missed the mark by about a month or so. It was a pretty tight battle between Hypership and Blocks for the prestigious award, but in end the cubical undead put the brakes on that out-of-control ship.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Block Zombies! – Mike

Block Zombies! gives a cubical middle finger to all those twin-stick shooters that constrict you to a tiny area and lets you run around a voxel wonderland while murdering the faces of tons of zombies. The game’s clean, colorful look suits it well, and it helps alleviate the feeling of dread that would otherwise accompany a small girl running around an entire town filled with zombies. Upgrade points allow you to beef up your arsenal and provide a little bit of a feeling of progression, and items like grenades and landmines help round out your supplies. You can check out our full review here.

Block Zombies! Review: Night of the Living Legos

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | 2 Comments

Thanks, I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1. Thanks for your addictive gameplay. Thanks for your stupid, catchy song. Thanks for creating a template that countless mindless, shambling hordes of games have imitated, and shamelessly refused to improve upon. The twin-stick shooter may be the most prolific genre represented in Xbox Live Indie Games, but most are redundant experiences that aren’t even worth Microsoft’s server space. But every so often a game like Block Zombies! comes around, shuffles the pieces up just enough, and mixes in a few new wrinkles to come out with something that feels fresh and fun.

Yes, Block Zombies! is another zombie twin-stick shooter, and yes it apes the voxel style that Minecraft returned to the limelight, but you know what? It totally works. The game’s carefree visual style and upbeat tempo makes Block Zombies! an absolute delight to play. It’s like you’re a  kid wandering through a Lego playground that just so happens to be infested with cubical zombies who explode into tiny pieces when killed.

New XBLIG Sales Data Analyzer Makes Tracking Sales A Breeze

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

Making video games is often a full-time job, but constantly comparing sales to see how the game is doing in various international markets over time can nearly be a job in and of itself. OnekSoft, developer of the XBLIG Angry Zombie Ninja Cats, has been doing some work outside of the gaming vein and recently released a sales data analyzer for XBLIG.

The instructions are straightforward enough: simply copy and paste your CSV or tab-delimited data, select your filters (region + trials or sales), and finally click the “Analyze” button, then voilà. Have you used the tool yet? If not, what have you been using to compare your sales data over time?

Hypership Still out of Control Announced, Released, Still out of Control

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, xblig | Leave a comment

Space is pretty darned big, which is a lesson the poor pilot of Hypership Out of Control! learned the hard way. The pilot’s brakes blew out back in 2010 (probably space rats chewed through some wires), and the ship has been zooming through the cosmos ever since. Now the adventure continues in Hypership Still Out of Control!, which was released yesterday on Xbox Live Indie Games for 80 MS points ($1). The sequel promises the same 4-player intense action, new levels, and new graphical upgrades that make the asteroids look significantly less like space meatballs (rats!).

2-for-1 Deal: Fight Robots While Fighting Cancer

Posted on by Dave Voyles in News, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Today’s busy schedules rely on us to multitask more than ever. With that in mind, Firebase Industries, developer of the beautiful XBLIG space shooter Orbitron: Revolution, wants you to put an end to cancer while at the same time putting an end to some maniacal robots. The studio will donate 100% of the net revenue for copies of the game purchased on Friday, January 20 and Saturday, January 21 to the British Columbia Cancer Agency through the BC Cancer Foundation’s Ride to Conquer Cancer event.

Orbitron: Revolution for Xbox 360 is priced at 240 Microsoft Points which is approximately US$3.00 and the net revenue from each copy sold is approximately US$2.00. To reach our goal of $5,000, we have to sell at least 2500 copies of the game over the two day period.”

You can purchase the game at the LIVE marketplace.
