Evaporated Headed to XBLIG, Slightly Inspired by Limbo…

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in News, xblig, XBLIG News | 4 Comments

There’s no shame in being inspired by a successful game. Super Meat Boy draws from countless old-school sources like Mega Man; Minecraft from Infiniminer; Super Mario Bros. from doing mushrooms… the list goes on. But sometimes a game looks so much like another game you have to wonder if legal teams everywhere are licking their chops, a phenomenon that Evaporated may cause soon enough.

Evaporated is an upcoming Xbox Live Indie and PC project from developer Simon A Jager. It looks unabashedly like Playdead’s indie smash-hit Limbo. Even the description of the plot (translsated from Swedish) sounds like its shadowy inspiration:

Dark, wet, and cold. You awake to the haunting sounds of the eerie forest your mother had long told you to stay away from. Welcome to the first episode of Evaporated. Faced with the cold breath of death running down your neck at every turn, you must now use your Wits and survival skills to find a way back home, or die as dinner for the dark creatures That surround you.

The developer’s blog also mentions that the game has already been submitted for certification for the Xbox Live Indie Games service. If all goes well, we should hear something about its arrival soon. The video cites April 22 as the PC version’s release date.

XBLIG New Release Roundup for the Week of March 18

Posted on by Mike Wall in Features, xblig | 1 Comment

You know it’s a good week when more than half of the new releases leave a lasting impression, which basically makes this the best week of indies of the whole year. There’s a lot of variety in the new releases from board games to 2D platformers to party games, but pretty much everyone should be able to find something they like with this lineup.

Armless Octopus Bloody Tentacle Award of the Week

Super Ninja Warrior Extreme – Dave
Despite its simplistic 8-bit appearance, this game offers quite a bit in the form of precise controls. Your actions are recognized instantly, and your character moves gracefully as he slices and dices his way through enemies and avoids obstacles. An absolute must try, if not immediate buy. Rock Bottom Review: Juvenile Joy

Posted on by Mike Wall in Reviews, XBLIG Reviews | Leave a comment

Get Rich or Die Gaming was profane, juvenile, and remarkably hilarious, but it was also shockingly successful. Perhaps word of mouth spread of its insanity, or perhaps people were drawn to the sleazy cover art and catchy name, but the game sold baller amounts of copies and allowed Angus Cheng quit his day job and work full time on its sequel. A year and a half later, Rock Bottom picks up right where Get Rich left off with the downtrodden Wilson Cooper stuck in the slammer after trying to pick up a prostitute.

Much like the first game, Rock Bottom isn’t so much a point-and-click adventure game as it is an excuse showcase some of the most ridiculous characters ever captured in a video game. This is basically an Adult Swim cartoon packaged into a game. The game roughly follows Wilson’s escape from prison and his rise to eventually becoming a “baller,” but the story takes a backseat to the wacky minute-to-minute adventures that Wilson finds himself caught up in.

Team 2Bit Hitting up Kickstarter to KO Fist Puncher

Posted on by Mike Wall in News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

Team 2Bit karate-chopped their way through the competition on The Next Game Boss, and now they’ve turned to raise the final $10,000 to finish their retro brawler Fist Puncher. The team estimates that they are about 80% done the game, which they liken to a cross between Double Dragon and Castle Crashers. The entire project has been self-funded until now, and the extra cash would allow developer Matt Lewandowski to quit his job so the brothers can move to San Francisco and take advantage of the office space they won on IGN’s reality show.

“Until now we could just make Fist Puncher at our own pace, no funding was really needed because we had our day jobs to pay the bills.  But after winning the Next Game Boss we realized we were in a new situation.  The buzz about us is happening right now, and people are asking to buy our games immediately.  It’s the classic dilema that drives businesses to raise capital - we have customers, but we need more resources to get the product into their hands quickly,” said Jake Lewandowski.

Backers of the project can receive everything from digital copies of Fist Puncher and Washington’s Wig (the game that won The Next Game Boss) to pixelized versions of themselves in the game as an NPC, enemy, playable character, or boss. For a cool ten grand, Team 2Bit will even turn your game idea into a playable 8-bit game. You can head over to the Kickstarter page for more info. The team plans to have Fist Puncher available on Xbox Live Indie Games and PC in September.

Indie games are already dirt cheap, but nothing can compare to the sweet, sweet sensation that runs all through your body when you win free games. Blud Works is going to give the winner of their Indie-Pocalypse Giveaway an overdose of those sensations, as one lucky person will walk away with more than 20 Xbox Live Indie Games, including some of our favorite recent releases such as EvilQuest and Little Racers Street.

Winning those games is going to require a little of work, or at least a bit of bandwidth. First, you’ll have to download trials for seven of the games in the bundle and email a picture of your recent download queue to Blud Works. You can repeat this process with a different group of seven games to enter again. You can also enter by donating to Mercy Children’s Hospital through the K.C. Entertainment Studios’ charity drive and emailing Bludworks with proof.

Don’t feel like taking any pictures or downloading demos but still want a hand-out? You can enter to win one of the “Wittle” bundles comprised of seven indie games by tweeting “I want to win the #XBLIG Wittle @armlessoctopus http://bit.ly/GOftN8 #WittleIndiePocalypse.” You can also email a picture of you playing your favorite indie game. The deadline to enter for the giveaways is April 7. If all goes according to plan, Blud Works plans to have future giveaways and bundles.

Philippe da Silva Spills the Beans on Ace on Steroids and the IndieFreaks XNA framework

Posted on by Dave Voyles in Interviews, News, PC News, XBLIG News | 1 Comment

This week I had the opportunity to sit down and speak with Paris, France native Philippe Da Silva of IndieFreaks.com. We spoke about his upcoming game Ace on Steroids, in addition to the IndieFreaks Game Framework, which is freely available to all XNA developers.

Ace on Steroids: What’s in the name?

Well, nothing really special. I was working on an Asteroids Redux with some enhanced 3D visuals, some good rock music and realistic 3D physics, so I was looking for a name that would remind somehow the original Atari classics name while showing this was a slightly improved version.

You made the decision to freely share all of your source code with individuals who purchase your game. What sparked this decision? Can you think of any other titles which adhere to this model?

It all came down while I was working on my generic game framework for XNA and realized that I couldn’t spend as much time as I’d like to write documentation, tutorials, and samples so other developers could easily get started with it. Read more

Raptor Resort Review: Venomous Vacation

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in Reviews, xblig, XBLIG Reviews | 6 Comments

No matter how many games I play, I find there’s always something I don’t know. Here’s a list of things I learned playing the newest Xbox Live indie twin-stick shooter, Raptor Resort:

  • Twin-stick shooters don’t absolutely need to have zombies in them after all.
  • Rooftops aren’t always solid and will sometimes permanently suck you in at waist-height, nullifying your ability to shoot in the process.
  • Bullets bounce off the ground with no loss of velocity.
  • The top of an ice-cream truck is the absolute safest place to mow down hordes of dinosaurs, even if your only weapon is a pistol. Read more

Beta test Dead Pixels on PC and get your name in the credits

Posted on by Anthony Swinnich in News, PC, PC News, xblig, XBLIG News | Leave a comment

CSR Studios’ Xbox Live Indie Games standout Dead Pixels was absolutely fantastic. More people will get the chance to experience it when it launches on PC in the near future, but it needs some beta testing first. And CSR is looking for volunteers.

Those selected for the program will receive a free copy of the finished game and their name will appear in the credits. Interested parties should email their PC’s specifications to DeadPixelsBeta@csr-studios.com . CSR anticipates every volunteer should receive a slot, so long as they can match the estimated requirements.

Estimated System Requirements

  • Windows XP, Vista or 7
  • Processor: 2.2 Ghz
  • Memory: 512MB
  • Video Card: 128mb Video Memory

The studio will notify volunteers “in the next few days” on their status as potential testers.
